WINTER STORM INFORMATION – Updated 1/23/2025 @ 2.15 pm

A significant snowstorm is predicted to hit our area late Saturday night into Monday (1/24/2026 – 1/26/2026).  The Township is preparing to handle the storm based on the information that is currently available.  The following information will be updated as needed.

UPDATE: A Snow Emergency has been Declared for Mount Joy Township from 10:00 p.m. January 24, 2026 until Monday, January 26, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Declaration of Snow Emergency

The Public Works Department has almost 132 lane miles of roadway to salt and plow. To plow the entire Township for most snowstorms one time, takes approximately 5 hours.

When snow falls, please be patient. We do our best to get a plow truck to your street as quickly as possible.  Plowing main arteries will be our first priority, followed by secondary roads and then developments. Township Roads – Mount Joy Township

Please stay off all roads during snow events so our crews can safely do their jobs.

Calling our office will not speed up the plowing process as our drivers each have a route that they follow.

We cannot take special requests for plowing so please plan ahead if your trips are essential.

All vehicles shall be removed from the street and parked in your driveway. This will help the Public Works Department with plowing and prevent several trips!  Basketball nets that hang over the roadway MUST be removed as well.  They are hazards to any passing vehicles, including garbage trucks, delivery trucks and, especially, snowplows that need to get close to the curbing.

Please remember, there is nothing we can do to prevent plowing snow onto the end of your driveway after you have already shoveled; it is not intentional and there is no way to avoid it. It is NOT the responsibility of the Township to clear the end of your driveway once the plow has passed through. 2nd-Shovel-Prevention.pdf

Do not throw snow into the street. When the plow truck comes by, the snow will inevitably end up back on your property.

If you are in a cul-de-sac, please understand that we need to push the snow somewhere; cul-de-sacs are our most challenging to plow and result in the most complaints, although we have few options.

Mailboxes – If it is damaged by the plow actually hitting it, please call the Township. If it is damaged by the snow leaving the plow, it is the owners responsibility to make the necessary repairs.  Please make sure the mailbox and post are in good repair prior to the storm!

Sidewalks and fire hydrants must be cleared within 24 hours after the end of a snow or ice event.

UPDATE: The Mount Joy Township office will be CLOSED Monday, January 26, 2026 due to the snowstorm.

Trash & Recycling Pickups – Penn Waste will be making a decision on Sunday as to how to handle pickups scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. In the event that they are closed on Monday, a holiday schedule will be in effect. That means all pickups will be delayed for one (1) day.  If they would need to close Monday and Tuesday due to unsafe conditions, Monday and Tuesdays pickups would be cancelled, and they would have double the collection on their regular trash day the following week.

The website and Facebook will be updated with information on office hours and refuse collection as information becomes available.
