Seal Coating – Scheduled to begin June 2

Seal Coating is scheduled to begin o June 2nd – Weather permitting on the following roads:

Westbrooke Development, Northbrook Development, Faith Ave, Mark Drive, Rosebud Lane, Hillside Road and Old English Lane.

We have received numerous comments and questions concerning seal coating.  Below is some additional information that hopefully will help to explain how the material is applied and why we do seal coating.

What is Tar-and-Chip? TechSheet131_Spring2025.pdf

Tar-and-chip, also called seal coating, is a cost-effective road maintenance method where hot tar is spread over the road surface, followed by small stones that embed into the tar. This process seals cracks, prevents water from seeping into the road base, and can extend pavement life by 5–7 years.

Water is our enemy, so as the roadway gets older and it starts to crack, the tar and chip seal those cracks and prevent the water from getting into the roadway underneath the surface.

It is typically used on lesser-traveled roads rather than major parkways or state routes, and while it can create a noisier driving surface, it generally does not make the road rougher once the stones are embedded.

Driver Considerations

  • Remove your parked vehicles from the roadway.
  • Expect minimal loose stones during and immediately after work.
  • The process may be noisy, but the road surface should remain smooth once the seal sets.

If you live near or travel on these roads, plan for temporary disruptions during the work period.

Paper Shredding Event – September 19, 2026 @ Mount Joy Township

Mount Joy Township is partnering with East Donegal Township and West Donegal Township to host a shredding event on Saturday, September 19th from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon at the Mount Joy Township municipal building.  This event is free of charge to all residents living in West Donegal Township, Mount Joy Township, and East Donegal Township. We will be limiting the amount of shredding to four boxes or bags of paper per property to be shredded.

We are asking those participating in this event for donations of non-perishable canned goods and boxed items (monetary donations also accepted) which will be given to the local food banks. Donations should be non-expired, non-breakable, and all items should be in unopened containers. Glass, frozen food, fresh produce/meats or home-made food will not be accepted. Your help is truly appreciated by those in need in our community!
